Three completely different vacations for the same budget!
One of the biggest misconceptions in cruising is that spending more money automatically means a better vacation.
We’ve found that’s simply not true.
In fact, if your budget is around $3,000 to $4,000 per person for a seven-night Caribbean cruise, you have several incredible options. The surprising part is that they’re all completely different experiences. One feels like chartering a private yacht, another delivers ultra luxury from the moment you step onboard, and the third combines the excitement of a large cruise ship with the exclusivity of a private retreat.
We’ve experienced all three ourselves, and while each one offers incredible value, the best choice comes down to your travel style. Here’s how we’d compare them.
Option 1
Emerald Yachts
If you’ve never heard of Emerald Yachts, you’re not alone.
This is one of the most unique cruise experiences we’ve had, and it honestly doesn’t feel like traditional cruising.
Instead of sailing with thousands of passengers, you’re aboard a 100-passenger luxury yacht where the atmosphere is intimate, relaxed, and incredibly personal. It feels much closer to chartering a super yacht than boarding a cruise ship, just without the private yacht price tag.
One of the biggest advantages is the itinerary.
Because the yacht is so small, it can visit ports that larger ships simply can’t. During our sailing, we visited places like Nevis instead of the main cruise port in St. Kitts, anchored off quiet islands, and even experienced a wet landing on Rendezvous Bay in Anguilla using Zodiac boats. Those are the kinds of experiences you simply won’t find on most Caribbean cruises.
Another standout feature is the marina platform.
Several afternoons during our cruise, the crew transformed the back of the yacht into a floating playground with paddleboards, kayaks, SeaBobs, inflatable platforms, and even a waterslide. Walking down a few steps from your suite and jumping straight into the Caribbean Sea is an experience we’ll never forget.
The service is exceptional thanks to the nearly one-to-one staff-to-guest ratio, and we loved spending evenings at the Sky Bar overlooking the ocean.
That said, no cruise is perfect.
The biggest area we’d like to see Emerald improve is the food. It was consistently good, but it never quite reached the level we expected from a luxury yacht experience. If dining is one of the biggest priorities for your vacation, that’s something worth considering.
For this budget, you’ll typically be looking at one of the yacht’s ocean view staterooms. While it’s the entry-level category, we were pleasantly surprised by how spacious it felt, especially thanks to the oversized window that fills the room with natural light.

- Travelers who think they don’t like cruising
- Couples seeking a boutique experience
- Travelers who prioritize unique itineraries
- Anyone looking for a true yacht-style vacation
Option 2
Explora Journeys
If someone asked us which cruise offers the best overall value in luxury cruising today, our answer would be Explora Journeys.
It’s currently our favorite cruise line, and we genuinely believe it’s one of the best values in the industry.
Unlike Emerald, Explora is a true cruise ship carrying around 800 guests. But because the ship was designed as an ultra luxury experience, it never feels crowded. There’s space everywhere, and the service remains incredibly personalized thanks to its impressive crew-to-guest ratio.
Where Explora really separates itself is the onboard experience.
While Emerald wins for unique itineraries, Explora wins for the ship itself.
There are multiple pools, beautiful lounges, specialty bars, and some of the best food we’ve ever had at sea. Whether you’re dining at the French restaurant, enjoying Mediterranean cuisine, ordering sushi made to order, or grabbing lunch at Emporium Marketplace, the quality is consistently outstanding. In fact, we’d rank Explora’s complimentary dining above the specialty restaurants on many other cruise lines.
The itineraries are also impressive.
Because Explora is smaller than traditional mega ships, it can still visit destinations like St. Barth that many larger ships can’t access. While you won’t experience beach landings by Zodiac like you would on Emerald, you’ll still enjoy ports that feel more exclusive than what most mainstream cruise lines offer.
One of the biggest advantages at this price point is the accommodations.
Every room onboard is a balcony suite.
That means even the entry-level Ocean Terrace Suite includes a spacious sitting area, a large bathroom, and a private balcony. Compared to many other luxury cruise lines where similar suites often start at $5,000 or $6,000 per person, we think Explora offers exceptional value.

- Couples looking for luxury without paying top-tier luxury prices
- Food lovers
- Travelers who enjoy spending time onboard
- Anyone wanting an all-suite experience
Option 3
The third option is completely different.
Instead of choosing a small luxury cruise line, consider booking a suite within the private “ship within a ship” areas on larger cruise ships.
Some of our favorites include:
- The Retreat on Celebrity Cruises
- The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line
- Yacht Club on MSC Cruises
These private enclaves combine the excitement of a large cruise ship with the exclusivity of a luxury hotel.
Guests enjoy private restaurants, dedicated pools, exclusive lounges, priority embarkation, concierge or butler service, and quieter accommodations, while still having access to Broadway-style shows, casinos, nightlife, water parks, and entertainment throughout the rest of the ship.
It’s truly the best of both worlds.
When we’re traveling with family or friends, or simply want more energy and entertainment, this is always a contender for the type of cruise we choose.
Compared to Emerald and Explora, these experiences are much more lively. You’ll find larger crowds, bigger productions, and far more onboard activities, while still having a peaceful retreat to return to at the end of the day.
Best for:
- Families
- Travelers who enjoy casinos and entertainment
- Couples who want luxury amenities without giving up big ship attractions
- First-time cruisers looking to upgrade their experience
Which One Would We Choose?
The truth is, there isn’t a wrong answer.
If we were choosing purely based on our own preferences, we’d probably book Explora Journeys most often.
For us, it strikes the best balance between luxury, incredible food, spacious accommodations, and overall value.
But there are times we’d absolutely choose the other two.
If we wanted to explore tiny Caribbean islands and enjoy the intimacy of a yacht, we’d book Emerald.
If we wanted Broadway shows, casinos, nightlife, and a more energetic atmosphere while still enjoying premium accommodations, we’d book a suite in The Retreat, The Haven, or Yacht Club.
They’re all fantastic. They simply deliver very different vacations.
Final Thoughts
One of the best parts about cruising today is that you don’t need an unlimited budget to enjoy an incredible vacation.
For around $3,000 to $4,000 per person, you can choose between an intimate luxury yacht, an all-suite ultra luxury cruise line, or a premium suite experience on one of the world’s best large cruise ships.
The key isn’t asking which cruise is “best.” It’s asking which experience fits the type of vacation you want.
