💡What To Know Before You Go
Planning your first trip to the Mediterranean is exciting, but it can also feel like a lot. There are so many countries, islands, and cities to choose from, and it is easy to try to fit everything into one trip!
We’ve been there.
After spending time exploring this region by both cruise and land, we’ve learned that the best Mediterranean trips are the ones that are focused, well-paced, and built around experiences you’ll actually remember.
If you’re planning your first visit, here’s exactly how we’d approach it, along with specific recommendations to help you get started!
📍Pick the Right Region
Start with one area –
The Mediterranean is huge, and each region feels completely different. Trying to see everything in one trip is the fastest way to feel rushed! Instead, pick one area and do it well.
Here are a few great starting points, plus a few things that we’d personally recommend doing in each:
Western Mediterranean (Best for variety and iconic cities)
- Barcelona, Spain
Walk La Rambla, visit La Sagrada Familia, and spend time in the Gothic Quarter - Nice, France
Use this as a base to explore Monaco or the French Riviera beaches - Rome, Italy
Tour the Colosseum and Vatican, then spend time just wandering
Eastern Mediterranean (Best for history and scenery)
- Athens, Greece
Visit the Acropolis early in the morning, then explore Plaka - Dubrovnik, Croatia
Walk the old city walls and take a cable car for views - Kotor, Montenegro
Climb the fortress steps for one of the best views in the region
Greek Islands (Best for relaxation and unreal views)
- Santorini
Watch sunset in Oia and walk the path from Fira to Oia - Mykonos
Beach clubs during the day, relaxed dinners at night
If it’s your first trip, narrowing your focus will make everything feel easier and more enjoyable!
🛳️ Cruise vs Land 🌍
Next Up: Choose your travel style! How you travel through the Mediterranean matters just as much as where you go!
Cruising the Mediterranean — Great for a first overview!
Pros:
- See multiple destinations in one trip (think of it as a sampler platter!)
- No need to unpack/repack
- Easy logistics
Cons:
- Limited time in each port
- Less flexibility
Must-do tip:
In ports like Naples, book a small group tour to the Amalfi Coast or Pompeii to maximize your time.
Land-based travel — Better for deeper experiences!
Pros:
- More time in each destination
- Better for experiencing local food and culture
- More flexibility
Cons:
- More planning required
- Not as seamless (typically requires multiple train rides / flights / moving hotels)
Must-do tip:
In Italy, take a train between cities like Rome and Florence. It’s fast, easy, and part of the experience.
If you’re unsure, a cruise is a great way to “sample” the region, then come back later and explore your favorite spots more deeply!
📆 Timing Is Everything
One of the biggest things we’ve learned over our Mediterranean travels … avoid peak crowds if possible! When you visit has the power to shape your entire experience.
Peak season (June through August) brings:
- Heavy crowds
- Higher prices
- Hot weather
That’s why for a first trip, we almost always recommend shoulder season!
Best times to go (in our opinion):
- May to early June
- September to early October
September is one of our favorites. The water is still warm, the crowds start to thin out, and everything feels more relaxed!
✨Must-Do Experiences✨
If you’re headed to any of these regions, don’t miss these specific experiences! There are a few things in the Mediterranean that are worth prioritizing, especially on your first trip!
- Sunset in Santorini 🌇
It’s popular for a reason. Go early, grab a good spot, and enjoy it - Amalfi Coast drive or boat day 🚤
Whether by car or boat, this coastline is one of the most beautiful in the world - Tuk Tuk Tour through Rome ⛪️
This is an easy way to efficiently see all of the popular sites in this massive city - Old Town Dubrovnik stroll 🏘️
Walking the city walls gives you a completely different perspective (where are our Game of Thrones fans at?!) - Beach club day in the Nice 🏖️
Absolutely iconic!! Plan for a slower day here, it’s all part of the experience
These aren’t just “tourist stops” – they’re some of our most memorable parts of our trips to the Mediterranean!
✍️ Plan Your Pace
Last but certainly not least, leave room to enjoy your trip! One of the biggest mistakes we see is overplanning. The Mediterranean is not meant to be rushed – it’s meant to be enjoyed!
Some of our favorite moments have come from:
- Sitting at a café with no plan
- Taking a long lunch by the water
- Wandering through cobblestone streets
Because of this, we recommend:
- Limiting major activities to one or two (max!) per day
- Leaving open time in your schedule
- Building in at least one slower day
If you try to do everything, you’ll miss what makes this region special!
💭 Final Thoughts
Start simple and build from there. Your first trip to the Mediterranean doesn’t need to cover everything. In fact, it shouldn’t!
Pick one region, plan a realistic pace, and focus on a mix of must-do experiences and time to just enjoy where you are. The Mediterranean is one of those places you’ll come back to again and again, and each trip will feel completely different!
